Bystander Effect — Latina Point

On the train today I saw a girl who was under some type of influence. She was throwing up and seemed hazy. Some ass hole was pretending to help her under the guise of a friend when in reality she didn’t even know him. It wasn’t until she started struggling to get out of his grip and yelling that heads began to turn and everyone began to wonder. I looked around and about 80% of the train was staring, including myself at a girl who needed help. No one bothered to get up.There was however one woman who made her way to the girl in an attempt to help her but stepped back after a while.

Then one man intervened when the situation got out of hand. He told the dick that was bothering her to back up. Then he got the girl a seat and let her slowly take in the situation. After a while he started asking her questions to get a feel of how to best help her. Apparently she’s 20 years old and just trying to get home. From Manhattan all the way into Queens he talked to her and looked after her. You could tell he was older probably early 30’s. He didn’t touch her, instead he sat beside her and talked to her, almost like a dad. When she got to her stop he got off with her, let her hold on to him. Earlier he mentioned he wanted to get her home safely so I’m guessing that was his goal.

Now maybe I’m giving this guy too much credit. He could potentially be a psycho and be out to get her too. But I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. This might be a bit much but I have so much respect for this stranger. I don’t think I’m capable of helping someone to that extent. So to see someone else do it, with no sign of malice made me really thankful. Ladies need to witness these things and realize there are good people out there. Not everyone is evil and out to take advantage of you.

I was too far away to hear anything the man was telling her but judging from her facial expressions she was seeing things in a whole new light. I hope she got home alright. And I hope she’s never in this predicament again. Tonight could have ended horribly for her.
