The Ball is in Your Court

Sayings have a way of making things sound simpler than they actually are.

When you say the ball is in your court, it means it’s the other person’s turn to make a move, right? Well physically that’s pretty obvious because you clearly see that the ball is in your court/hands what ever, and it’s your opportunity to make a move.

But how do you KNOW that’s the case when you’re speaking figuratively? How sure can your really be that it’s your turn? What if, what you thought was a move on the other person’s part, wasn’t really a move? What if you think the ball is in THEIR court but they don’t know that, and you think they aren’t interested in the opportunity, when in reality they just don’t know the ball is in their court.

Things get complicated unless you say “Hey, just wanted to let you know that it’s your turn to take action.”

The only bad thing about that is that usually we want the other person to read our mind and just KNOW they have to take action which is ridiculous and only adds to the miscommunication in the situation.

That’s why I think people should start, flat out saying what they feel and not wait until the other party somehow attains psychic powers. This way things can be discussed…and hopefully solved.
