Child

I am well aware that to most people I’m a child. I’m 20 years old and I depend on my parents for most of the basics in life. I’ll admit I’m not too wild about being considered a kid, but I’m definitely not an adult. People will always try to fit you into an age appropriate category. It helps them place you in a ranking system and decide how to treat you. I understand how that’s human nature, and to be honest I don’t have much of an issue with that. What I do have an issue with is the connotations these categories carry.

To most people the word child equals immaturity, recklessness, stupidity and several other negative characteristics. A child needs to be limited, and should follow specific guidelines because they aren’t capable of certain things on their own. Ehh I somewhat agree but at the end of a day we’re all individuals and should be treated as such.

Yes I’m a kid, but I’m also pursuing a Bachelors degree, pay for all my necessities, hold several leadership roles, take care of my own finances, and I’m fairly responsible. I would appreciate it if people took this into consideration when categorizing me as a child. Yes to a certain degree I’m immature, reckless, and stupid but if you really knew me you’d know it’s very little. My favorite hobbies are sleeping and eating…need I say more?

I can’t remember where I was going with this…but I guess I’d like to get some credit for not fucking up yet.

Not all young people are trouble makers and party animals…
