Last Day

Yesterday was my last day student teaching. It was an incredibly gratifying experience. The second grade class I student taught in had a Winter Celebration planned out for their parents. They sang New York State of Mind by Billy Joel and the Greatest American Hero theme song Believe it or Not by Mike Post. They had hand movements to go along with it as well. It was the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. Then they each said one thing that makes them feel like a hero.

It was definitely a proud moment to hear all the great things these kids do. After their presentation they shared their realistic fiction, and NYC landmark stories with their parents while eating breakfast. I was lucky enough to be one of the main characters in one of the NYC landmark stories. The whole point of the story was that I was on my way to the U.S.S Intrepid along with Hia my co-student teacher. It was funny and artistically tasteful. =)

Anyways after all this fun the students gave us cards they created, took a group picture with us and then hugged us as tight as they could. It was very emotional. It’s amazing the impact you can have on these kids within a few months. What really touched me was one boy. He never really showed me much affection but for some reason he kept coming back for hugs. And like the other boys he didn’t really hug me. He just leaned his head on me and just let me hold him. It was great. And on that note I went and took my last final. Probably the best ending to a very difficult semester.

I also really appreciated my cooperating teacher’s gift. She gave me the book Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. She knows I changed my major from Education to Psychology and she’s very supportive of my decision to remove myself from a path that just isn’t for me. And it meant a lot to me to have someone encourage me and support me the way she has. I’m been blessed to keep coming across people that make such a wonderful impact on my life.

These kids were the best part of this entire semester. I’m so lucky to have met them.
