Sometimes it's better to be silent

I listened to a man have a discussion on the train regarding black people and their struggles. He wasn’t crazy, he was definitely in his right mind. There was some truth to it his argument but it just wasn’t logical. He kept equating “Spanish” people with white people. And by Spanish he meant Dominican and Puerto Ricans. According to him, we have more privileges than black people. And of course it’s all undeserved because we weren’t even born in this country, and we’re only receiving it because we are a lighter skin tone. By the way one of the privileges he mentioned that we get but black people don’t was welfare.

There are so many issues with this argument and he said so much more but I won’t go into it. I will however say this:

1)Dominican does not equal Spanish, we AREN’T FROM SPAIN! I am fully aware that Spain conquered us and raped our women. Thank you for the reminder. But NO this was not planned. We didn’t ask to reproduce with them so that our children can be a lighter skin tone and eventually come to America and have more opportunities…

2) Since when do Dominicans have the same privileges as white people?! Generally speaking we are under the minority umbrella. And for the past 19 years I haven’t gotten any special treatment for being Dominican. And I won’t even touch on the ambiguity of race. *To some people White includes Irish, German, and Polish.

3) THERE IS NO SET SKIN COLOR FOR SUCCESS. Take a look at our President.

I know I picked out everything that related to me. And I know his point was that blacks are oppressed in their own country and others who are less deserving have more rights. That’s all good and I’m sure there is someone out there who can find a way to argue that. However, his example was just not valid or in any way helpful to his argument.

Everyone has their opinion but if you’re going to argue something at least do it intelligently. Keep up with the times man. We’ve all been oppressed stop making yourself into a victim. Rise above it.
